I have a story to tell

The floor is lava. I leap from the couch placed at one end of the room to the other, landing straight on it without knocking the glass table off. Phew! Mom is annoyed, but she loves me. I can get away from things at home. It is my safe zone. It’s another day at school, and we are discussing the concept of latent heat, I saw documentaries on it and wanted to speak up, but I could not. The fear of crowds around, what if I don't make sense to anyone? Should I still take the leap? I have been living two very diverse versions of myself. I was an amusing comical character at home and in school, a shy and quiet kid, struggling to interact with others while finding a sense of belonging. Maybe that’s why I found solace on stage. I could play anyone, allowing my creativity to flow in all directions, and expressing myself to the fullest without feeling like a lie. So, theatre came into my life when I was young. The one time when I punched a glass shelf thinking I was Superman, the days my dad and I played animal clutches (yeah, don’t ask what that game was)- I was trying to enact something, trying to create something.

One day at the school auditorium, I was serving refreshments to everyone there for the play auditions, not sure why I went on that stage or what lines I was supposed to memorize. When my turn came to perform, I enacted a scene from a famous action film telling all the rules of the fight club. However, later I came to know that the actual audition was for a romantic comedy play. Everyone looked stunned; some were even laughing with amused joy. I could not care less, I was just deep in my natural flow, performing. Every second I stood on that stage, I felt alive. It was a fragrance of freshness, I was no longer merely a background character in the story of my own life. Obviously, I did not get the part, but I could gauge appreciation in the applause and connection with the audience. I wasn't sad about being rejected that day, the happiness I felt by doing what I wanted was my real reward. I experienced bittersweetness and realized that the taste of failure and rejection sometimes tastes sweeter. How brave and unique it was to be a misfit and stand out from the crowd by being who I was. I could now relate more wisely and emotionally with the journey of my grandparents, who had broken the cage of bondage and courageously left their remote village in Bihar more than sixty-five years back, precisely for the pursuit of happiness and a dream to achieve a better, secure life where they can live with human dignity. They started a legacy that gave me the opportunity to have the ambition to make their stories heard. Listening to epic stories before bed perhaps sowed the seeds in my young heart, the love for storytelling, but the stories about my ancestors, their struggles, their dreams, and aspirations to ensure a dignified life for the next generation inspired me to give my voice to countless such unheard stories.  I aspire to touch the lives of individuals and connect the conscience of humanity by narrating authentic stories that may work as a catalyst for a more harmonious and equitable world.
